Oracle backup and jobs

Oracle Backup And Jobs monitoring is part of the Oracle Operations workflow. Use it to confirm RMAN backup freshness, recent backup job outcomes, Scheduler job state, failed Scheduler runs, recovery-area pressure, archive destinations, and redo log switch activity.

RMAN backup evidence

Mini DBA reads backup evidence from RMAN and recovery views where the monitoring login has permission. The key questions are:

  • When did the last successful backup complete?
  • Have recent RMAN jobs failed?
  • Is the backup age outside the configured threshold?
  • Is recovery-area or archive destination pressure preventing safe backup and recovery?

The RMAN Backup Age and RMAN Backup Failures alerts should be treated as recoverability alerts. Even if application performance looks healthy, stale backups or repeated backup failures should be investigated promptly.

Scheduler jobs

Scheduler jobs can drive maintenance, ETL, reporting, purge, and application workflows. Mini DBA shows job inventory and recent failures where DBA_SCHEDULER_JOBS and DBA_SCHEDULER_JOB_RUN_DETAILS are available.

Review failed jobs with the job owner, job name, error number, additional info, and first/last failure time. A failed job may be the cause of missing statistics, incomplete batch processing, archive cleanup failures, or application data issues.

Recovery area, archive destinations, and redo

Flash Recovery Area pressure, archive destination errors, and unusual redo log switch frequency are operational signals that often explain backup or Data Guard symptoms. Review these together rather than treating them as separate issues.

Permissions

The monitoring login needs access to the Oracle backup, Scheduler, recovery, archive, and redo views used by Mini DBA. A CDB/root common monitoring user is recommended on self-managed multitenant systems because backup and recovery evidence is usually instance-level rather than PDB-local.
